I have a decent PC, not top end by any stretch but I don't believe average either and it runs pretty well in the less populated areas. Thank you for the post! I have spent a lot of time dropping clips for mods I like that had really high ones, and it does seem to improve performance. In this case the delete button in the editor is the one you will need most Too many objects too close together along with too high clip distances will slow things down to an unplayable crawl on an average machine.

That said you can get a mod to work well if you take the time to optimize itĭensity is another factor to consider. If it looks like more than an hours work to fix, I just delete the map and avoid anything from the author in future

Trees underground, lots of stuff underground all with silly high clip distances that are just eating your systems resources, even if you have a fast PC. If I really like the look of a map that's not well optimized, I'll give it a look in the editor and usually find poorly made models for decoration with crazy high clip distances. These are the real good ones because they are optimized properly. But there are only a few mod maps that I can say the same thing about.

I can run the stock maps at full settings with reasonable framerates on my laptop (travel means no desktop hot rod for me) that don't interfere with gameplay. Many modders have really fast PC's so either don't notice the drop in performance and therefore don't care or as they don't see it it are simply unaware of this need to optimize (that's the keyword) their map or mod so that others with less powerful PC's can enjoy it too.

How much it affects your performance depends on how fast your PC is. Why do modders not set much lower clips if they make a significant dip in performance? Does it make a difference if I edit downloaded mods to lower clips? How much does clip distance effect performance? have a default clip distance of 1,000,000, when 1,000 and less works quite well for many objects and mods? Just wondering why most objects and mods, etc. But if I remember correctly, only the clip distance of the object (blue cube in GE tree) itself is used, not the one for the whole transform group. But just think about thousands of trees with clip distance 1000000. This might not mean much for low number of objects you are using. It would be useless to have them rendered and dropping performance. Or other way around, small objects with high clip distances are not making any sense, because you might not physically see them in game from a certain distance. So with a value of 50, an object will only be visible (rendered) in game if you are closer than 50m to it. The clip distance value is given in meters. Depends on the mod and on how often you would place/use it in your game. If you edit downloaded mods to lower clip distances that might help to increase performance a little bit.

But again, as far as I know, if it is left at 1000000, Giants might not approve this mod. So especially for placeable mods, it depends on the modder which clip distance value is acceptable. For example a building only popping up in game if you are closer than 100m for sure is not really nice. Using higher clip distance values enables you to create a certain look/atmosphere to a map. As far as I know, clip distance is one of the items Giants checks for mods released on Modhub. That is why you should check the correct clip distance.
